Our Legacy & Valor

Air Commandos

Legacy Image

An Air Commando is an individual who is part of the exceptional team carrying out the Air Force Special Operations mission. Air Force Special Operations falls under United States Special Operations Command. They are known for being disciplined, innovative, adaptable, rigorously trained, credible, mission-focused, and resilient. The term "Air Commando" was coined by General Henry H. (Hap) Arnold in early 1944 to describe a group of Air Corps personnel in India who supported British forces in Burma. The group's lineage began with Project 9, a secret recruiting and organizing operation in the United States. Air Commandos are equipped with specialized aircraft and are part of a larger force that includes pilots, combat systems officers, intelligence officers, and support personnel. They are often deployed in small units, which requires them to trust and depend on each other.
